A goldfish or garden pond will not need to be as large as a Koi pond. However, the smaller the pond is, the fewer plants one will be able to keep healthy in it. The third type on pond involves a waterfall. Which could also be used with either the Koi or garden point. But, if one just wants the sound of a waterfall and does not want to deal with fish or plants, a very small pond will work for a waterfall pond.

If a person wants to start from scratch and use a rubber liner they will need to get plans for building a pond from the Internet or a home improvement store. There are many different types of ponds and different ways to build ponds. Less effort is involved if a person uses a prefabricated pond liner and a kit. The kits come with plans that explain each step in detail for building a pond.

Deciding on where to place the pond will be important. A pond needs to be in a location that will not get rain-water run-off. The run-off has chemicals in it that can harm the fish and plants in a pond. So, you will either need to build up the pond or set it in the highest location in your garden.

Fish don’t mind being in the shade. If a person is building a fish pond that will not contain a lot of plants, then having the pond in the shade for much of the time will work find. However, if the pond is for a garden, the pond will need to be placed in a location that gets sunlight at least five to six hours per day.

Unless you want to spend a majority of your time digging leaves out of your pond, do not put it near trees. Many people make the mistake of putting their garden under a tree so that they can sit in the shade and enjoy their pond. Unless the tree is one that will not drop leaves, this is not wise. Leaves cannot stay in a pond, they must be removed.

When digging your hole for the garden remember that the pond will be much smaller than the hole you are digging, about a quarter less. This is because after the lining and accessories are added the pond is smaller than one would expect. For a Koi pond this can be a serious difference. A Koi pond needs to be a minimum of 1000 gallons for Koi to remain healthy and grow properly and the pond needs to be at least three feet deep.
